Acupuncture FAQs

So...what exactly is acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the insertion of very fine needles into specific points throughout the body. These acupuncture points are located along 14 major acupuncture pathways or meridians that carry the vital energy of your body known as “qi”. One may think of meridians like rivers. When these rivers become congested or depleted, your body is prevented from optimal nourishment and regeneration, resulting in pain and illness. Stimulating appropriate acupuncture points returns proper qi circulation to the meridian, restoring your body’s innate ability to heal itself- eliminating symptoms and pain, and promoting wellness.

What will happen in the first session?

The first session comprises an in-depth discussion of your primary concerns, full health history and a deep examination to determine the function of your body’s systems. Then we’ll get you comfortably situated on the table where your practitioner will place the needles. After that, you simply rest on the table for around 30 minutes. Most patients actually become so relaxed that they fall asleep during this time. Easy!

What conditions can acupuncture treat?

Chinese medicine is a complete medical system with the ability to treat a very wide variety of conditions. See the CONDITIONS TREATED section for a list.

Will it hurt?

No! These needles are tiny. Most patients do not even feel them being inserted- the most that you may feel is a quick little pinch or slight achy sensation. You should not feel any discomfort while resting with needles in and most patients usually fall asleep during their session.

Philip is by far the best acupuncturist in Boston! I was in and out of the Doctor from a cyst in my foot and decided to try acupuncture to reduce the symptoms. After seeing Philip, my pain was completely gone! I continued to see him throughout marathon training and he addressed any pains that came up and I felt 100% for race day!!! I will definitely be seeing Philip during every marathon training cycle I have moving forward. I recommend North End Acupuncture to anyone that needs a well educated and thoughtful specialist!!!!

I have tried over a dozen practitioners in the city, but this is hands down the best acupuncture in Boston that I have experienced. I initially went to North End Acupuncture to get treatment for digestive issues. I saw Philip who specializes in digestive disorders. There was a lengthy first session where he asked me all sorts of questions and after he ordered some lab testing it was evident that I had Leaky Gut Syndrome, as well as some not so good bacteria in my gut. Philip explained each test result clearly so that I could understand it as well as what the plan was to treat it going forward. We started with acupuncture as well as a few Chinese herbal supplements, and we made a number of dietary and lifestyle changes. The results were profound. Within a week I had a significant reduction in symptoms and within 7 weeks my digestion was back to being completely normal after nearly a decade of significant issues. Not to mention my energy had returned and headaches were gone...two things that I never thought were related to my digestion. I'd give 6 stars if I could.

I’ve been going to north end acupuncture for over 2 years now. Caleb is very good at what he does. I was suffering from intractable migraines and extreme insomnia when I first started treatment. I can say with confidence that I rarely suffer from migraines anymore, I sleep better and the overall quality of my life has improved significantly.

Philip is so caring and thorough; he takes the time to listen to your concerns and discuss treatment. I found the acupuncture treatments and Chinese herbs very helpful when looking for relief from menopausal symptoms, stress, and generally anything that was bothering me when I visited him. I highly recommend!

I've been going to Philip for the past 2 years and I can't say enough good things! I tried a handful of other acupuncturists before him and can confirm that his knowledge, service, and care can't be beat. He has helped me with SO MANY health issues and the treatment itself is a meditative experience in it's own. His treatments (acupuncture, herbs, and advice) have worked better than anything I've tried before. I have and will continue to recommend North End Acupuncture to anyone who is looking (or anyone who is complaining about anything health!). Thank you, Philip!!

I love my acupuncture treatments with Lexi! I was skeptical about acupuncture at first but she explained why and how she was going to be helping me with my tennis elbow pain. Since my first treatment she has helped me with quality of sleep and improved the appearance of my shingle scars. If you have been skeptical give acupuncture a try, Lexi is wonderful.
